Meta is facing a class-action lawsuit alleging it extracted biometric information from billions of Facebook and Instagram photos without notice or consent. Families in Illinois and California claim facial data was used to develop generative AI systems and NameTag, an unreleased facial-recognition feature designed for Meta’s Ray-Ban and Oakley smart glasses. The complaint alleges NameTag could compare faces captured by the glasses with stored faceprints. Meta denies the allegations, says the lawsuit is “without merit” and maintains that NameTag has not launched. The case brings Meta’s use of social-media photos for AI and wearable technology under renewed privacy scrutiny.
