AOL Pulls The Plug on Dial-Up Internet After 34 Years Of Iconic Modem Screeches

by rrollins, August 11, 2025

After 34 years of screeching modems and slow-loading pages, AOL will officially shut down its dial-up internet service on September 30, 2025. The move marks the end of a digital era that once connected millions of users across the U.S., especially in rural areas. Alongside the shutdown, AOL will retire its Dialer software and Shield browser. Once a web pioneer, AOL’s dial-up peaked in the 1990s with over 30 million subscribers. Today, only a fraction remain. As broadband, satellite, and 5G dominate, dial-up fades into tech history—leaving behind nostalgia, CDs, and the unforgettable sound of connecting to the internet.
