Spotify is introducing a novel social feature known as ‘Jam’, aimed at transforming the way we share and enjoy music together. This new feature presents a real-time collaboration opportunity where multiple individuals can unite their musical tastes and create a collective playlist.

Jam builds upon the technological groundwork previously laid by Spotify in multiperson playlist experiences like Blend and Duo Mix. Its central purpose is to foster communal listening moments, making it an ideal companion for gatherings or parties where everyone wishes to be part of the musical journey.

Here’s how it works: To initiate a Jam, you must be a Spotify Premium subscriber. However, any Spotify user, whether free or paid, can contribute to the evolving playlist. To set a Jam in motion, one simply needs to tap on the speaker icon or the three-dot menu, then select “Start a Jam” from any song, album, or existing playlist.

Users retain control over the device through which they want to broadcast the tunes, whether it’s their smartphone or a designated speaker. Those on the same shared Wi-Fi network will receive an invitation to join the Jam when they open their Spotify app.

If you’re hosting a social gathering, Jam offers multiple avenues to invite others into the mix. Methods range from physically tapping phones together to scanning a QR code or sharing a link. Impressively, up to 32 individuals can partake in a Jam’s private session simultaneously.

While the host holds the reins to the music, they can opt to enable “Guest controls”, allowing all participants to influence the playlist by removing songs or altering the track order.

Jam also incorporates Spotify’s personalization technology. It cleverly considers the collective listening preferences of the group to suggest tracks that align with everyone’s tastes.

While Spotify has plans to further enrich the Jam experience with additional features, specific details remain undisclosed.

Elsewhere in Spotify news, the platform has recently started a new venture to use AI voice cloning to translate podcast episodes into multiple languages.
