Listening to music might be an enjoyable experience, but it is further elevated by being able to belt out to your favorite songs. Spotify’s lyrics feature was an upgrade that allowed fans to croon out the (right) words to almost any piece they wanted to. Now, the curtain seems to be closing on this feature… for those not subscribed to the app.

Some users of Spotify’s free advertising-supported version recently found themselves confronted with a pop-up message affixed to the lyrics card, cordially stating, “Enjoy lyrics on Spotify Premium.”

The feature was initially introduced globally in 2021, following earlier testing phases in select markets in 2019. These were sourced and integrated into Spotify through a collaboration with Musixmatch. Notably, artists can also upload their own lyrics, contributing to the accuracy of the information.

As is customary in the tech world, Spotify frequently undertakes tests and experiments to refine the user experience. However, the company has chosen to remain tight-lipped about the specifics of this particular trial.

This maneuver to restrict access to lyrics behind a paywall aligns with Spotify’s overarching strategy of trying to attract and retain users. It’s part of a broader initiative that includes ventures like introducing an AI-powered DJ and a home feed reminiscent of TikTok’s format.

As Gizmodo points out, Spotify is in a delicate financial position, striving to balance profitability with user satisfaction. Meanwhile, its primary rival, Apple Music, leans more heavily towards bolstering hardware sales than chasing immediate profit margins. That said, the days of having an impromptu karaoke session on your own will surely be missed.
