To create a more inclusive online experience, Pinterest recently introduced its brand-new ‘body type technology’—an artificial intelligence innovation that utilizes shape, size, and form to identify a diverse range of body types.
This novel technology is designed to work in tandem with the platform’s previously launched skin tone technology to scour its vast database of over five billion images. Together, these initiatives aim to reshape the way the site’s algorithms curate and present content, particularly in categories related to women’s fashion.
According to Pinterest, the change aims to ensure that users from all walks of life can find inspiration from people they resonate with.
To develop the body type technology, the network’s Inclusive Product Team collaborated with experts both within and outside the company.

Together, they harnessed the capabilities of computer vision technology to gain a deeper understanding of visual content. The result? A more nuanced approach to curating content. The site has now been recalibrated to expand the representation of both body types and skin tones across search results and related Pins.
For example, when a user searches for date night outfit inspiration, they will now encounter search results that encompass a spectrum of body types and skin tone ranges.
“At Pinterest, we believe that inspiration begins with inclusion. That’s why we continue to develop inclusive product experiences that make it easier to find the best ideas that feel made for you,” said Sabrina Ellis, chief product officer at Pinterest.
“With the powerful addition of our new body type technology to our suite of inclusive AI efforts, we have improved representation of different body types on the platform by 5x across women’s fashion-related searches in the US.”
