Meta is facing mounting scrutiny in India after a BBC Eye investigation revealed that Instagram ads promoting child sexual abuse material were approved and circulated. Reporters identified around 30 ads containing explicit terms such as “rape video” and “child video,” which directed users to Telegram channels allegedly selling illegal content for as little as ₹99. India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology quickly issued a notice to Meta, ordering the removal of such ads and demanding a detailed explanation within seven days. Meta insists it has a zero‑tolerance policy, removing the flagged ads and disabling advertiser accounts.
