Instructure, the company behind Canvas, has confirmed a settlement with hacker group ShinyHunters following a massive cyberattack that exposed data from an estimated 275 million users. The breach compromised names, emails, IDs, and private messages, with hackers claiming possession of 3.65TB of stolen information. As part of the agreement, ShinyHunters returned the data and provided “shred logs” asserting it was deleted, though Instructure acknowledged it cannot fully verify the deletion. The settlement aims to prevent further leaks and restore confidence in Canvas, but questions remain over the scale of exposure and the reliability of hacker assurances.
