Walmart will pay $5.6 million to settle a consumer protection lawsuit filed by four California counties over allegations of overcharging shoppers. The case revealed that items like produce and baked goods were sold with less weight than advertised or at prices higher than posted. The settlement includes $5.5 million in civil penalties and nearly $140,000 in investigative costs. Walmart must also assign staff to ensure pricing accuracy across its 280 California stores. Shoppers who purchased weighted goods or bagged citrus between October 2018 and January 2024 may qualify for compensation under a related class action settlement.
