President Donald Trump has threatened to block the Washington Commanders’ proposed $3.7 billion stadium deal in D.C. unless the NFL team restores its former name, the Redskins. The Commanders dropped the name in 2020 following criticism from Indigenous groups, and team owner Josh Harris has stated there are no plans to reverse the change. Trump’s demand, made via Truth Social, also targeted the Cleveland Guardians, urging a return to the Indians name. Both franchises have reaffirmed their commitment to their current identities, despite Trump’s claims of widespread support for the old names. The stadium project remains under negotiation.
