In Hong Kong’s Xiqu Centre, the Cantonese opera Trump, The Twins President wrapped its latest run with a surreal blend of satire and tradition. Written by feng shui master Edward Li Kui-Ming, the show features a fictional Trump abducted by Martians, a Chinese twin named Chuan Pu, and a water-gun duel with ‘Zelensky’. First staged in 2019, the opera has evolved to include jabs at Harvard, Elon Musk, and global politics. With elaborate costumes and rhyming verse, it aims to revive interest in Cantonese opera among younger audiences while delivering a message of peace through absurdist humor.
