Archaeologists in Frankfurt, Germany, have unearthed a 1,800-year-old silver amulet in a Roman grave, providing the earliest evidence of Christianity north of the Alps. Dated between 230-270 CE, the amulet contains 18 lines of Latin text, including Christian phrases and references to Saint Titus and Jesus Christ. This discovery pushes back the timeline of Christianity’s spread into northern Europe by at least 50 years. The amulet, known as the Frankfurt Silver Inscription, was deciphered using advanced CT scanning technology, revealing its purely Christian content, a rarity for its time.
