PETA is joining the dinner table with other advertisers this holiday season, but it’s not digging (into) whatever they’re eating. For the second year running, the animal rights organization has released a Christmas commercial that calls for the end of slaughtering sentient creatures for tradition’s sake.

The thought-provoking animated film, titled Kill the Tradition, Not a Turkey, stars an endearing turkey named Tessa, brought to life by the talented voice of actor Jane Horrocks. The 90-second spot opens on a cheerful note, with Tessa the Turkey singing her own take on Deck the Halls as she humorously comments on the “weird” festive rituals of humans.

Don’t get too attached, however, as things turn grim for the jolly singing turkey, who realizes her own fate as part of a Christmas tradition.

The short was developed in collaboration with London creative agency House 337 and aims to challenge age-old holiday customs that involve the consumption of poultry, and inspire individuals to make a compassionate choice by leaving turkeys and other animals off their festive tables.

Besides launching online, the poignant commercial will also reach movie theaters in December, while short-form variants will appear on PETA’s social media channels.

PETA is known for its creative and sometimes provocative activations, with the aim of encouraging people to consider the ethical dimensions of their dietary preferences. Occasionally, these methods are more grotesque and serve to highlight the repercussions of society’s consumption habits.
