Leonardo DiCaprio’s Re and the Bezos Earth Fund are launching the $200 million Phoenix Species Project to help 100 critically endangered species across 30 countries. The multi-year initiative will support conservation work including breeding, habitat restoration, disease management, translocation, and efforts to raise vulnerable young animals before release. Species range from Madagascar’s golden-crowned sifaka to Tanzania’s pancake tortoise and Mexico’s Cozumel harvest mouse. Indigenous Peoples, local communities, scientists, and conservationists will take part in recovery programs. The project has also attracted greenwashing criticism linked to DiCaprio and Bezos’ environmental footprints, while supporters point to its long-term conservation funding.
