President Donald Trump is urging the Senate to approve the Sunshine Protection Act after the House passed it with a wide margin. The bill would make daylight saving time permanent unless states opt out. Trump has pressed Republican senators through Truth Social and private outreach, arguing that Americans are tired of changing their clocks. The proposal faces resistance from lawmakers in agriculture-heavy and Western states who warn that later winter sunrises could affect safety and daily routines. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has also promoted the change, saying it could reduce accidents and improve public safety.
