Pope Leo XIV will unveil Magnifica Humanitas, the Vatican’s first encyclical devoted entirely to artificial intelligence, on May 25. Presented alongside Anthropic co‑founder Christopher Olah, the document signals a rare Vatican–tech collaboration and highlights the Church’s bid to shape AI governance. The encyclical stresses protecting human dignity, warning that AI can mimic reasoning but cannot replace moral judgment or genuine relationships. Its release, timed 135 years after Rerum Novarum, positions the Vatican as a moral counterweight to governments and corporations driving rapid AI development, especially amid military ambitions and geopolitical competition.
