Studio Ghibli and major Japanese publishers have formally demanded that OpenAI stop using their copyrighted content to train its video generation model, Sora 2. Delivered via trade group CODA, the letter cites Japan’s copyright laws, which require explicit consent for derivative use. Companies like Bandai Namco and Square Enix argue OpenAI’s opt-out system is inadequate. Sora 2’s ability to mimic artistic styles—especially Ghibli’s—has raised concerns about creative dilution. The issue escalated when OpenAI CEO Sam Altman used a Ghibli-style profile image. Japan’s stance may influence global AI copyright standards as artists seek more control over how their work is used.
