Ai Weiwei Transforms Roosevelt Island With Cat-Covered ‘Camouflage’ Installation

by rrollins, September 8, 2025

Ai Weiwei’s Camouflage installation transforms Roosevelt Island’s Four Freedoms Park into a contemplative space for protest and public dialogue. Launching September 10, 2025, as the first commission under the Art X Freedom program, the tent-like structure is draped in camouflage netting printed with cat silhouettes—symbols of innocence and vulnerability. A Ukrainian proverb threads through the work, highlighting war’s uneven toll. Visitors can leave personal messages on ribbons, making the piece participatory and evolving. Timed to coincide with the UN General Assembly and WWII’s 80th anniversary, the installation questions the fragility of freedom in today’s global landscape. Ends November 10.
