YouTube is rolling out AI-powered age estimation technology in the U.S. starting August 13, 2025, to better protect teen users. The system uses behavioral signals—like viewing habits, search activity, and account history—to infer whether a user is under 18, even if their birthdate says otherwise. Once flagged, accounts will automatically receive teen-specific safeguards, including disabled personalized ads, digital wellbeing tools, and restricted access to sensitive content. Users misidentified as teens can verify their age using ID, credit card, or selfie. The update reflects growing regulatory pressure and expands protections previously limited to verified accounts.
