After nearly a decade of development, Riot Games has officially canceled Hytale, the highly anticipated Minecraft-inspired sandbox RPG, and will shut down Hypixel Studios. Despite early hype and a 2020 acquisition by Riot, the project struggled with technical challenges and shifting creative goals. Developers cited that scaling back would compromise the game’s vision, and no viable path forward remained. Riot supported the team with severance and transition resources. The original Hypixel Minecraft server will remain unaffected. The cancellation marks a sobering end to one of the most ambitious indie-to-mainstream gaming projects in recent memory.
