Salt Lake City has adopted three new official city flags to circumvent Utah’s HB77, a law banning non-sanctioned flags—including Pride and Juneteenth flags—on government property. Mayor Erin Mendenhall unveiled the flags, which incorporate the Sego Lily emblem, making them legally compliant while preserving their symbolic meaning. The move, approved by the City Council, aims to uphold diversity and inclusion without violating state law. While Governor Spencer Cox allowed the bill to pass without his signature, he acknowledged concerns about its divisiveness. The city’s workaround has sparked debate over free speech and political neutrality in public spaces.
