The typography realm has a new reigning champion as Fiverr declares Montserrat, an open-source sans serif, its Font of the Year for 2024. This flexible font family is hailed as the very type for businesses aiming to sharpen their image with a modern, versatile aesthetic.

Fiverr Logo Maker’s deep dive into the most frequently used fonts in purchased logos put Montserrat at the pole position, with Bellefair and Poppins trailing behind. The title was further cemented by the overwhelming preference for Montserrat among the platform’s community of designers.

Designed by Julieta Ulanovsky, Montserrat is inspired by the vintage charm of signage and posters from the Montserrat neighborhood of Buenos Aires. This awe translates into a typeface that marries the old-world charm with contemporary design needs, offering an array of weights and styles. Montserrat’s inclusion in Google’s catalog of open-source fonts has led to its adoption on over 20 million websites.

“Montserrat is a fan favorite thanks to its clean geometric lines and modern aesthetic. It has a wide range of weights and styles—so it’s super versatile,” describes Nadav Barkan, Fiverr’s vice president of design. “It’s a go-to choice for businesses aiming to contemporize their visual language. In other words, Montserrat has both form and function.”

In a statement, the typeface’s creator remarks: “I’m honored and very grateful that Montserrat was selected as Fiverr’s 2024 Font of the Year. The font is widely accepted and has an important presence in the communications we see today, both printed and digital.”

Yet, the selection of Montserrat as the gig platform’s Font of the Year is more than a nod to its design. Rather, it sheds light on the evolving preferences at the intersection of designer creativity and client needs. While designers might lean towards more adventurous or niche fonts, clients often prioritize clear, impactful, and adaptable designs, with many settling on Montserrat as their font of choice for final designs.

For instance, Bellefair was the second-most prominent typeface across logo purchases but was only the 31st favorite in a poll between designers. No matter, Montserrat topped both charts.

“Clients often prioritize designs that are not only visually appealing but also immediately comprehensible and accessible… In that process, many are landing on Montserrat as their choice,” notes Yonat Rauner Trieger, Fiverr Logo Maker business owner.

As Montserrat is primed to further script the year of 2024, its popularity points to how businesses perceive typography in brand storytelling and identity. Aesthetically striking nuances aside, it’s also about delivering strong and effective communication.
