Kengo Kuma & Associates, a name synonymous with architectural ingenuity, is breaking new ground, or should we say, crafting new ground, with its latest furniture series for the Aman Residences in Miami Beach. This line, part of the Aman hotel chain’s foray into home furnishings, ties artisanship with our enduring bond with the natural world.
This limited-edition furniture series, called Migumi, draws its inspiration from the harmonious interplay of sunlight and wood, a natural spectacle Kuma observed in Miami Beach. The name “Migumi” itself is a thoughtful blend—“Mi” resonating with Miami’s radiant sunlight and “gumi” (assembly) referring to the wooden framework crafted from slender pieces of oak.

Bringing tables and dining chairs to the table, the Migumi collection comprises concealed steel structures and six-layered veneered oak, topped with elegant Calacatta marble for a harmonious blend of Japanese tradition and contemporary flair.
This intricate structures of 20mm square oak members, further reinforced with square stainless-steel pipes in stress-concentrated areas, not only adds resilience but also captures the dynamic interplay of light and shadow.

As the day progresses, the shadows cast by the wooden framework dance and shift, creating an ever-evolving, luxuriant ambiance. This dynamic interplay is central to the collection’s appeal, making each piece a living element in any room.
Unveiled at Design Miami/ 2023, the Migumi Collection also serves a deeper purpose—it’s a daily reminder of our deep-rooted connection to the environment. Kuma’s designs for the Aman Miami Beach Residences, embodied in the table and chair, reflects a philosophy where design, nature, and living spaces intermingle seamlessly.
