This Halloween, Krispy Kreme is handing out treats to those who’ve pulled a few pretty hurtful tricks. Specifically, it’s trying to connect with fans who have ghosted their friends or family members with a few peace offerings.

The attempt is in response to a haunting phenomenon, documented in a study commissioned by the chain, in which two in five Brits have reported to being “ghosted” by a loved one in the past year. Many individuals also say they’ve done the ghosting themselves, with 38% admitting to withdrawing communication in the last year.

Krispy Kreme in the UK has a hole-in-one idea to summon ghosters back again. This spooky season, it’s rolling out empty ‘Ghosted Boxes’ that let you contact loved ones from the other side of the radar through the medium of Krispy Kreme doughnuts.

The black-and-white boxes have an eerie power; they fill up with free Original Glazed doughnuts when you take them to a Krispy Kreme location. The hope is that victims of ghosting incidents will be able to entice long-lost souls to return in the flesh by luring them with the treats.

Customers can order their Ghosted Boxes to be mailed to the person they are trying to reach out to, or have them redeem a digital code, for free. Each order comes with a four-pack of doughnuts, along with a note inviting recipients to reunite with the sender.

While the boxes were intended for distribution between October 9 and 13, unfortunately, they’ve now gone poof.
