Samsung has introduced the SmartTag 2, the successor to its original SmartTag, offering a host of new upgrades in functionality and durability.

One new change is that the SmartTag 2 incorporates Bluetooth and ultra-wideband (UWB) capabilities. Its redesigned ring-shaped form includes inner metal components for added robustness, so you can safely hang it on keyrings, luggage bags, or your pet’s collar.

Another improvement of the SmartTag 2 is its IP67 rating, making it ideal for tracking pets outdoors due to its dust and water resistance. So, no matter how inquisitive little Fido or Mittens is, the SmartTag can endure the outdoors and keep a watchful eye on your furry friends.

The device’s battery life has also been significantly improved. Power Saving Mode provides an extended 700-day range, while Normal Mode delivers 500 days of usage—50% more than its predecessor.

If you have lost something with your SmartTag 2 still attached, a new Lost Mode allows those who have found it to scan the device and view a message with your contact details.

Designed to safeguard valuable belongings such as keys, wallets, and suitcases, the SmartTag 2 can be tracked via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) for short-range tracking or through UWB for more extended-distance tracking.

The inclusion of Samsung’s augmented reality (AR) technology aids users in finding their lost items using their smartphone’s camera. In addition, the SmartTag 2 can control smart home appliances via the SmartThings app.

One caveat, however, is that the SmartTag 2 is currently compatible exclusively with Samsung devices and relies on a Galaxy phone for tracking.

The SmartTag 2 is scheduled for a global release on October 11, with a price point of US$30. It will be available in black or white.
