Justin Roiland, co-creator of famed animated series Rick and Morty, is putting up a painting for auction for the first time ever.

The acrylic-on-canvas painting, titled mypeoplefriend, will be included as part of auction house Sotheby’s latest contemporary art online sale.

As of today, bids for the painting – filled with cartoon faces in a mixture or orange, blue, green, and white – have already reached US$28,000, exceeding original estimates of US$15,000 to US$20,000.

“As his title suggests, Roiland compresses visual information, blurting it out in a single word. In this way, his composition becomes a kind of dream world, where there is no respect for visual or spatial logic. Instead, there is only a feeling, or rather, a progression of feeling,” said Sotheby’s, as reported by Artnet News.

This isn’t the first time the beloved creator is trying his hand at creating art. Earlier this year, he sold a collection of hand-drawn NFTs for a whopping US$1.65 million, ranking among the most expensive crypto-art sales to date. All proceeds from that sale went towards aiding homeless encampments in the Los Angeles area.

Take a look at Roiland’s painting, and other lots in Sotheby’s online sale, here. Bidding ends July 21.
