Xiaomi Explores New Charging Tech That Powers Up Smartphones With Sound

Xiaomi is considering a new technology that allows smartphones and other devices to be charged using sound.

According to Live Mint, the firm filed a patent with the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) detailing a system that uses mechanisms to store energy, as well as a sound charger that can power smartphones.

How it works: the charger will convert the vibrations from sound waves into an alternative current, which is then converted to direct currents to charge devices.

This isn’t the first charging technology the Chinese smartphone maker has unveiled recently. Last month, it debuted its HyperCharge technology, which saw a smartphone go from 0% to 100% battery in just eight minutes.

Back in January, it also launched AirCharge technology, which allowed devices to be charged remotely. As per Live Mint, the company said the charger’s built-in antennas could “accurately detect the location of a smartphone, before transmitting millimeter-wide waves directly through beam-forming.”

While smartphone technology advances year on year, charging technology hasn’t changed as much from the release of the first smartphone. With Xiaomi’s new advances in this area of technology, it could be sooner rather than later that a wholly unique way to charge handheld devices hits the market.
